Garland Texas: Flipping Off a Bully

I am an avid defender of our First Amendment right to free speech but when that speech imperils public safety, as it did in Garland Texas this past week at the ‘draw a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed’ contest, I can’t help but feel that the wiser choice for the Garland ISD (the owners of the venue) and the City of Garland would have been to NOT allow the event to take place.

The school district and the city potentially placed the lives of many of the citizens of Garland at risk for what was, in the end, an insult not just to radical elements in Islam but to the many million Muslims who mean no harm to anyone.

Garland was very fortunate that the only challenge to their nonsensical cartoon contest that night was posed by two amateurs who literally only lasted fifteen seconds when opposed by a single Garland Traffic Enforcement Officer. Had radical Islamic elements sent in their “A” Team of trained jihadi warriors, not only the Curtis Culwell Center but much of the surrounding area may have been devastated by their bombs and bullets.

Yes Free Speech is and always will be an essential element of American life but too often people like Pamela Geller (and the better known Fred Phelps) use it to spread hate against people they personally detest; that IS still free, protected speech but, in my opinion, it is not what was intended by the First Amendment. The question being re-asked today is: ‘Is hate speech also protected by the First Amendment’ and the Supreme Court has already ruled that YES hate speech is also Constitutionally protected speech (see Snyder v. Phelps )

So, when the skinny kid in the schoolyard raises his middle finger in the face of the large, mean-tempered bully he doesn’t have to worry about a Federal Warrant being issued for his arrest, he just has to worry about being well enough to get to school the next day.

Free speech, like everything else in life, has consequences and when you use it, not to present or defend your own ideas but to tear down others you must be prepared to accept the possible consequences (and in this case, retribution of people who are not bound by our rules, laws or culture). Pamela Geller and the other attendees at the Garland Event were standing up for their Constitutional right to “flip off” the bullies in Islam (something most every American wants to do) but I seriously doubt they had thoughtfully considered the possible consequences. Nor did the City of Garland; to them this was possibly a display of patriotism but more likely it was just an opportunity to enjoy some positive media coverage.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the majority of the citizens of Garland did not appreciate the thought that their city, or even their own neighborhood may have been turned into a war zone.

We are, without a doubt, at war with the radical elements of Islam but wars are meant to be fought by trained and equipped  soldiers, not the bakers, butchers and retailers in a small American city.

Big Government and the end of Freedom of Choice

big govtFor months now the media has focused on the expense and performance of the Obamacare website; it’s almost like the media and, by extension, the American public, has accepted as a fact the fiction that it’s appropriate for the Federal government to subsume the entire American health care/health insurance industry instead of working on specific, targeted legislation that would fix specific problems and any real inequities that exist.

Yes the health care industry had some problems but the Affordable Healthcare Act did nothing but push healthcare professionals aside and put amateurs in charge; and it was all done for a political, not a humanitarian reason. The Federal Government, under President Obama and the ever growing Progressive movement, has cast aside it’s traditional role as protector of traditional American freedoms and has decided that it is much more beneficial to the cause of an ever growing Federal Government to become the ‘controller’ of American society. The “Affordable Healthcare Act” is, unless we ‘defang the serpent,’ is obviously just the beginning.

The expense and performance of the Obama Healthcare website is NOT the problem that we need to discuss and worry over on a daily basis. The seldom mentioned REAL problems are the twisted mentality that:  1) allowed an entire sector of the free market to be taken over by the United States government when it was entirely unnecessary and 2) Caused an  anti-American values agenda to invaded the government in the form of a quasi-socialist president with a tongue as sharp and lies as smoothly delivered as the mythical Lucifer.

[In fact, following the carnage that has befallen modern America and that is threatening many future generations, first at the hands of Liberals during the last two “Bush years” in the name of “too big to fail” and then in the following years under the leadership of Barack Obama under the guise of “transforming America”. (The only transformation that has taken place during the Obama years has been transforming America into a place where success is punished more harshly than failure.) I’m beginning to doubt that Lucifer is a myth. My view now is that Lucifer is real and that he is actually a 21st Century Liberal. ]

The Affordable Healthcare Act is not the kind of thing that should have EVER happened in this country — this country that was built on free markets, on rugged individualism, on the principles: that the most ingenious successes will to rise to the top of the socio-economic ladder; that people have the right to choose their own destiny and that those who honestly need help will be given that help from those who are more successful or, as a very last resort, from out tax dollars.

Things are obviously quite different now and it’s not all Barack Obama’s fault (although he has made a tremendous contribution) but the result of those forerunners of the modern day Progressives who convinced the American citizen that he/she cannot make it on their own and then reconfigured the government to make sure that their prediction came true for succeeding generations. Staying in power became more important than empowering the citizenry.

It’s hard to determine if President Obama is actively working to destroy traditional American values or if he is just some inept do-gooder with a silver tongue and ideas that belong in the Communist world.

If President Obama and his puppets in the Congress were not obsessed with the false notion that the Federal Government’s role is  to be ‘savior of society’, they might understand that the Federal Government’s actions are limited by the Constitution specifically because the founders had the foresight to fear what is happening right now: government overreach and unreasonable restrictions to the freedom of American citizens.

Another, actually even larger, problem is a Supreme Court that has defaulted on it’s duty to protect the Constitutionally guaranteed rights of the American people by not declaring the obviously unconstitutional “mandatory” aspect of this legislation unconstitutional when it had the opportunity.

So much static! It’s hard to hear the Republican message.

“President Obama, bless his heart, has tried to substitute government for free people, and it has not worked, and it’ll never work.” Mitt Romney

That’s it! That’s the message that America-loving patriots have been trying to get you to hear since this election cycle began.

In war time when a plane had a “heat seeking” missile locked onto it’s exhaust, the most common countermeasure was to release a decoy (a pyrotechnic device) that created more heat than the plane’s exhaust and then quickly change course. This tactic would confuse the missile — the missile, designed to track the hottest thing in it’s path, would go after the decoy.

That last descriptive paragraph may seem rather obscure but think about it in relation to the current election season: the plane represents President Obama’s record as president; the missile represents the Republican message — the message President Obama is afraid to have the American public understand — the message that, once understood, will “shoot down” his presidency; the decoys are the Obama campaign’s attempts to deflect public awareness of the message.

The message, once again, is: “trying to substitute government for a free people has never worked and will never work.

Here come the decoys!

— Romney needs to release more and more tax returns!
— The Republican party is the enemy of all women!
— Congressman Todd Akin’s views are vile and subscribed to by the entire Republican party!
— The Romney/Ryan Medicare policies will make the Medicare System fail faster and harm current retirees!

Even though these Democratic decoys (and many others) are a combination of nonsense, exaggeration and outright lies they have served their purpose well by distracting the public’s attention — with the invaluable assistance of the main-stream, Obama-supporting media — away from Obama’s failures and away from the public’s awareness that Obama’s publicly stated mission is not to save and strengthen America, it is to “remake America.”

Remake America into what, you may ask? The answer is clear, President Obama wants us to become addicted to European-style Socialism; once we become “junkies”, addicted to government handouts, people will not rule the state, the people will feel (and be) dependent on the generosity of the state.

One caveat: Trying to substitute government for a free people has never worked and will never work, unless we allow it to happen.

Bloomberg: Obama Shifts From Medicare to Focus on Younger Voters

Attack on the FRC

The fact that Tony Perkins organization, the Family Research Center (FRC), is (as the Southern Poverty Law Center states) clearly a ‘hate group,’ does not excuse the actions of 28 y/o Floyd Lee Corkins II.

When Corkins brought a gun into the offices of the Family Research Council in Washington, D.C., stating that he didn’t like their policies, then shooting the building manager in the arm, he was committing a terrorist act. Hopefully he, and other nuts like him, will be put away for many years and prevented from ever again legally owing a firearm.

Tony Perkins is spreading the blame for this act between the shooter and the Southern Poverty Law Center. Quoting Perkins:

“Let me be clear that Floyd Corkins was responsible for firing the shots yesterday that wounded one of our colleagues … but Corkins was given a license to shoot an unarmed man by organizations like the Southern Poverty Law Center that have been reckless in labeling organizations ‘hate groups’ because they disagree with them on public policy.”

Bloomberg today, as this Bloomberg article indicates, disagrees: “Unfortunately for Perkins, it’s pretty clear that a fair portion of FRC’s business is hate.”

What else would you call a group who has arbitrarily set itself up as the ‘moral compass’ for America and who regularly (and absurdly) accuses gays of being pedophiles:

“While activists like to claim that pedophilia is a completely distinct orientation from homosexuality, evidence shows a disproportionate overlap between the two. It is a homosexual problem.” (FRC President Tony Perkins, on the FRC website, 2010)

When you consider how reviled pedophiles are (as they should be), every gay person must certainly consider that to be incendiary hate speech?

The organization People for the American Way (motto: Speak out against intolerance — that’s the American way) has published a “Profile of the Family Research Council”. Here, from that profile, is a statement of the “FRC’s Principal Issues”:

“Since the early 1990’s, FRC has emerged as a leading conservative think-tank championing “traditional family values” by lobbying for state-sponsored prayer in public schools, private school “vouchers,” abstinence-only programs, filtering software on public library computers, the right to discriminate against gay men and lesbians.

“FRC’s objective is to establish a conservative Christian standard of morality in all of America’s domestic and foreign policy.

“FRC has dedicated itself to working against reproductive freedom, sex education, equal rights for gays and lesbians and their families, funding of the National Endowment for the Arts and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. FRC supports a school prayer amendment and would like to ‘disestablish’ the Department of Education.”

This is a description of a group that is opposed to legally expressed individual freedom and that puts them in direct opposition to freedoms guaranteed in the Constitution of the United States.

Thanks to that same Constitution, however, the FRC is guaranteed the right to preach their anti-gay message (even if it consists of lies) and spread their anti-freedom (anti-American) message . . . but aren’t they being hypocritical when they complain about honest negative evaluations of their organization’s efforts?

No free choice in South Dakota (without government consent)

According to Politics Daily, South Dakota’s Republican Governor Dennis Daugaard has signed a bill that requires women who want an abortion in the state of South Dakota to wait three days — three days, that is, after being forced to receive “counseling” from a doctor (probably a government appointed doctor) and from an anti-abortion counselor. If the woman cannot be successfully brain-washed in three days, she is then apparently free to receive an abortion.

Governor Daugaard, after signing the bill, made this statement:

“I think everyone agrees with the goal of reducing abortion by encouraging consideration of other alternatives. I hope that women who are considering an abortion will use this three-day period to make good choices.”

“Good choices?” Since when is the government responsible for directing or judging our choices when no law is being broken? Doesn’t that sound a little too Orwellian?

Regardless of what Governor Daugaard and the other religious conservatives in the South Dakota capital “think,” the fact, according to Sarah Stoesz, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood in South Dakota. is: the majority of the people in South Dakota don’t agree!

“The voters of South Dakota, by resounding margins at the ballot box, TWICE have told their legislators that the decision to have an abortion is between a woman, her family and her doctor and that government should not intrude on that decision,” Ms. Stoesz said.

I couldn’t agree more! Neither the government nor the church should have any control whatsoever over the decision of a free individual to carry a baby to term or to terminate the pregnancy.

The bottom line is: anti-abortion sentiment is fueled by the Christian Religious Right and over the past two decades the Religious Right’s hold on our governments, and therefore on our lives, has continually grown stronger.

On a personal level, religious beliefs are wonderful but when those beliefs are forced on people by government fiat you may soon find yourself immersed in a burgeoning Theocracy.

I’m sure that the governor of South Dakota “thinks” that he is doing the right thing by circumventing the stated will of the people, but then so has every tyrant, dictator and religious fanatic in history.

Out-of-Focus Healthcare

ALT TITLE You hear many bad things about Socialized Medicine (aka, Government-run healthcare), such as this article from the Heritage Foundation and, on the other hand, you hear many good things, such as this article in the Las Vegas Sun newspaper; so who do you believe?

You can believe this: everyone will always try to sell you their “bill of goods” and will always malign the competition. You can also believe that many true “horror stories” have arisen from the current U.S. healthcare system, just as they have from the Canadian, British, German, etc. systems of socialized medicine. But the important thing to remember is that all of the above is, in the end, unimportant because it distracts us from the one important issue: freedom to choose! Under any government-run healthcare plan (even if it begins as just an “option”) we will loose our freedom to choose.

Up until now, our healthcare has been a matter of individual choice. If you want health insurance you can have it — if you don’t you can opt out. If you like HMOs or public clinics or private doctors or faith healers or any other type of healthcare provider, its your choice.

With a government controlled healthcare system your choices will, no doubt, be limited, you MAY be forced into purchasing health insurance even if you don’t want it, you MAY be funding abortions, you MAY be paying for healthcare for millions of people who are in this country illegally, you MAY see what the Obama Administration calls the “Public Option” be the ONLY option when, in the end, health insurance providers can’t compete with a government system that doesn’t require a profit or even balanced account books.

Why all the MAYs in the above paragraph? Limbaugh, Hannity, and all the other Conservative pundits always tell you “it’s in the plan” but they’re selling their own bill of goods. It’s NOT in the plan because there IS NO PLAN! Everything up until now has been proposed and it’ll stay proposed until a piece of legislation has passed the House, has been modified and agreed to by the Senate and the House and reaches the president’s desk.

That must NOT happen while we have people in powerful positions in the Legislature who drool over the prospect of turning the United States into a model European country. That must NOT happen while we have a president who is so out-of-focus he has forgotten everything he must have learned about American history, American traditions and the free-market economic systems that made the United States into the richest, most powerful country in the world.

“Leveling the playing field” and “Economic Justice” are two phrases President Obama used when he was running for president (he also threw in a comment about the Supreme Court’s inability to address “redistribution of wealth”) and these are the phrases that made it crystal clear what direction he wanted to take this country; I said that during his campaign in this post and every proposal he has come up with has proven me right.

Yes the current system of healthcare has some major problems that are driving up the costs to healthcare consumers and, with the Federal government’s help those problems could be fixed — but not right now! With President Barack Obama in office, a fix MAY not be possible until he learns to focus and remember that he is the president of the United States and in the United States it is the people who are free to choose and who have the right to choose well or choose poorly; in the United States, it is the government’s responsibility to protect that right.
