The students of Parkland are kinda right, allowing most 15-year-olds to purchase a semi-automatic weapon may be insane, but, at the same time they are wrong to assume that that kind of restriction will do very much to solve the problem of school shootings.
Semi-automatic rifles, in the wrong hands, (in the hands of the untrained, the mentally and morally challenged or the sociopath who places no value of human life) are nothing less than weapons of mass destruction. Whatever can be done to remove the guns from these ‘wrong hands’ should, obviously, be done. The thing that the anti-gun crusaders are missing is that these weapons are already ‘out there,’ and just as you can’t ‘unthink’ an idea, you can’t unmake a reality. Make AR-15s and other semi-automatic weapons illegal and you are taking them out of the hands of law-abiding citizens and leaving them in the hands of criminals.
Right now, across the country, school administrators are waking up to the fact that school security, in most schools, is a joke. As NRA President Wayne Lapierre suggested this morning in a speech to CPAC: we protect jewelry stores and banks and federal buildings, aren’t our children just as important? Don’t they need the best security available?
The most viable option to protect kids in school is to make it so that the “bad people” who want to kill school kids either can’t get into the schools or won’t want to. If every school had strict access restrictions such as armed guards at limited access points or student id cards with ‘chips’ (like most credits cards now have) it would make it next to impossible for someone who is not supposed to be in the school to get into the school. I predict that most schools, by the end of this decade, will have trained, responsible and armed employees in the building before the students arrive for school. Across the country there is a loud call to allow teachers and other school employees who are trained and licensed to carry a concealed weapon to bring their weapons to school. One county sheriff has offered to train and license the first 300 school teachers who apply at no cost to them. Just imagine how hesitant one of those “bad people” would be to enter a school where the teachers can shoot back.
