2009: the Political Year That Was

Standard

2009 has been, if nothing else, newsworthy.

It is the year Barack Hussein Obama, became our president; began his destruction of our economy in the name of “leveling the playing field; named a wide variety of unqualified “friends” to important positions in government and the judiciary; broke virtually every campaign promise; repeatedly apologized to the world for U.S. “indiscretions”; signaled to the world that we are now a kinder, gentler nation and not as much of a threat to dictators or terrorists; won the Nobel Peace Prize based on . . . well no one really knows what it was based on . . . and began the government takeover of a large percentage of the free market.

It should therefore be no surprise that this is also the year that: our National Debt rose to historic levels; our unemployment rate rose to a level unseen in decades; bankruptcies rose to obscene levels; Muslim Terrorists felt free to resume their attacks on United States soil and most countries seriously considered basing their currency value on something other than the U.S. dollar.

All this was bad but, at least in my opinion, the most disturbing . . . most despicable and most surprising event of 2009 was the following statement made by General George William Casey Jr., the Chief of Staff of the United States Army, in reference to the terrorist attack at the Fort Hood Army base in Texas by an openly hostile Muslim Army Major, an attack that left 13 dead and 38 wounded:

“We have to be careful because we can’t jump to conclusions now based on little snippets of information that come out. And frankly, I am worried — not worried, but I’m concerned that this increased speculation could cause a backlash against some of our Muslim soldiers. And I’ve asked our Army leaders to be on the lookout for that. It would be a shame — as great a tragedy as this was, it would be a shame if our diversity became a casualty as well.”

Granted, General Casey didn’t have all the information about the shooter, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, but it’s obvious that his concern, his sympathy is not with the victims — it’s obvious that diversity is far more important.

The fact that this attitude of political correctness, this level of apeasement has infiltrated the highest levels of the military should scare the crap out of you!

A bunch of other things happened this year of course and you can review most of it HERE at CNN.com. The CNN version is, of course, more comprehensive and far less polarizing.

Obama’s ‘Fine Print’

Standard

Change indeed!

Americans grow up, finish their schooling, get their own cars, their own places to live, go for an easy to get credit card or two, develop a credit history, eventually get married, raise a family, get a bigger place to live and if they haven’t already, at that point many start abusing their credit.

Problem is, the average American has very poor money management and credit management skills (that’s a subject not taught in too many schools) as a result they will quickly run their golden egg producing credit cards up to their limits by making those fabulous minimum payments and will, to their everlasting amazement, then be offered a new even higher credit limit.

What I’ve just described is more than just a series of snapshots that depict people getting into financial trouble, it also describes a culture created by and manipulated by our banks, credit card companies, loan companies and millions of businesses who advertise: “We Finance!” This has been going on for the past two or three generations and it has created a ‘False American Dream’; not the American Dream that says if you work very hard and use your money wisely you can accomplish almost any personal goal — this ‘False American Dream’ has led countless Americans to believe that they can ‘afford’ anything they want because the money is out their waiting for them — past credit history be damned. No one reads the fine print!

From Finance To The ‘Age of Obama’:

In 2008, many American voters were in deep financial trouble because of the False American Dream and this was exacerbated by the Bush Administration’s mismanagement of the economy. With these two conditions in play it’s only natural to assume that these American voters would reject any candidate with any connection to President Bush (i.e., the entire Republican party) and jump at the chance to elect a president who promised the most help. Thus, we entered the age of Obama.

Picking a president based on campaign promises is just as perilous an adventure as applying for that third credit card after the first two are maxed out. It doesn’t seem like you have any choice and you live on the hope that everything will work out all right. Trouble is, with everything you do in life there is “fine print” that needs to be understood and “consequences” that need to be faced. In the case of candidate Obama, the “fine print” was hidden in the practiced eloquence of his speech and in the blinding glow of his well-polished charisma. The fine print didn’t lie either; it presented a fairly accurate picture of the thoughts and aspirations of the candidate, i.e., ‘the free-market does not work; big business is not to be trusted; every individual American must sacrifice so the government can provide for those who have less and need more; only government control can save us all from the ongoing financial crisis and only the government can put American’s back to work.’ That and more was all there in the “fine print” for all of us to “read.”

It’s safe to assume that many people who voted for candidate Obama did not look beyond the rhetoric and charisma to “read” the fine print. Those who did and still voted for candidate Obama probably fall into two categories: 1) those who like the idea of an all-powerful government that would “take care of them” and 2) those who understood the implied socialism in what candidate Obama was saying and assumed that it was all just political rhetoric — like in every election — and not to be taken too seriously. After all who would seriously think that a new president would dare to even consider turning the United States economy and culture into something resembling a European country’s?

It’s time to face the consequences — next time “read the fine print”

Time for Optimism: Root For Obama

Standard

Talk shows are continually pounding on Barack Obama’s lack of judgement because of his previous associations with Bill Ayers, Jeremiah Wright and a host of others who have terroristic or sketchy backgrounds. Ayers was brought on Good Morning America this past week and questioned about his associations with Obama and about his feelings toward the past acts of the Weather Underground. This past Friday, The “Ladies of the Factor” were substituting for Bill O’Reilly on his “Radio Factor” show and they spend a full hour discussing Bill Ayres’ and Barack O’Bama’s relationship. Callers to other radio talk shows won’t give it up either — insisting that Barack Obama lacks the judgement to be President of the United States, may not even be a citizen of the United States and will run this country into the ground.

Why can’t these idiots understand that not only is it too late for these kind of accusations and this kind of examination of Barack Obama’s qualifications but its counter productive. Barack Hussein Obama, for all intents and purposes, IS the 44th President of the United States. What we should be concentrating on now, is what he is saying now and what he is doing now.

No matter who you voted for or wished for or voted against, its time to get together and actually root for Obama, hope he makes the right decisions, hope that he picks a cabinet that will help him make those decisions, make positive suggestions about the directions that our country should move in and maintain optimism that we, as a nation, will will not only survive our economic, social, political and international problems but be made stronger because of them.

As little as I care about what foreign governments think of us, it only makes sense not to give them ammunition to use against us. If China, Russia, Iran and all the other countries with failed or failing political systems see us uniting around our new president and, yes, “rooting him on” they are less likely throw those “tests” at us — those tests that VP-elect Biden correctly warned us about. On that subject let me say that, by giving the American public those warnings, Joe Biden stood up and did a very brave thing — the right thing — and he was probably privately scolded for doing it. That one act makes it a lot easier for me to accept Joe Biden as the next Vice President of the United States.

After January 20th, Barack Obama will no doubt do things and say things that we will not like! Every president has opposition to every move he makes and we should not hesitate to oppose him if we feel he is wrong — but we must constitute a loyal opposition not a destructive one. Oppose him yes but don’t demonize him. If we attempt to destroy the President of the United States we make our country weaker and take a chance on destroying the United States itself.

The Creeping Socialism of Barack Obama, Part II

Standard

Over 1-1/2 years ago, on February 10, 2007, I posted an article in this blog titled “The Creeping Socialism of Barack Obama”. I’ve had several comments posted, both positive and negative, during all those months and the latest was today (11/6/08). I’d like to share this last comment because both the comment and my reply might interest those of you who have feelings about this election victory for Barack Obama:

Kylelee writes:

“America has spoken and despite the republicans attempt at striking fear in the hearts of the voters, Obama is now our 44th president. I’m confident he will get the job done, and I’m proud of my country for not falling for the cheap tricks that were thrown at them. I’m glad my country has matured enough to elect a man of African decent to the office of president. It shows that Barack has true vision and leadership which is why the American public was able to overcome their prejudices to vote him into office.
Finally, Barack is NOT a socialist. His idea of putting a heavier tax burden on the rich only makes sense. He is not taking their money and giving it to the poor. He only wants to lessen the burden on individuals who are struggling right now. The rich will not become poor and the poor will not become rich. The rich will stay rich and the poor will have more of an opportunity achieve their dreams.”

Yes indeed, America has spoken and Sen. Obama will soon become our 44th president.

While Kylelee is “confident” Sen. Obama can get the job done I remain only hopeful that he doesn’t do too much damage to our country. He will be my president too and I will support him when I believe he’s right but I will attack and vilify him when I feel he’s wrong.

Race ‘seems” to have been a big issue in this election (as it was in this comment) but I believe that’s overstated. I believe that Obama’s race had *almost* nothing to do with his winning the election! The “almost” is because the majority of black voters DID vote for him ‘specifically’ because he’s black and they felt this was some kind of racial milestone. I can certainly understand that and I’m sure that helped his vote total but it doesn’t look like that was a deciding factor. On the other side of the imagined racial divide, I believe there are only a very few white Americans who would have voted against Obama because he’s black (or almost black anyway). There will always be a few bigots (on both sides) — if I believed that there was a Hell, I would gladly wish them there.

The major factors in Obama’s win over McCain, as I see them, were 1) The overwhelming hatred for President Bush which most likely would have doomed any Republican candidate to defeat; 2) the severe economic downturn which can in part be placed at the feet of the Bush administration but in a much larger part be placed on the Congress and Senate which have been dominated by Democrats for the past two years (funny how that wasn’t publicized more in the media!) and 3) would be the media itself who gave Obama a much easier ride than they could have, if they had not, for whatever reason, wanted him to win the presidency.

Let me repeat two specific portions of Kylelee’s comment:

1) “It shows that Barack has true vision and leadership which is why the American public was able to overcome their prejudices to vote him into office.”

What this election shows is NOT that; what it shows is that the majority of the American people are foolish enough to want to tamper with principles that made this country great, principles that mean nothing to Obama, principles such as self-sufficiency and personal responsibility.

2) “Finally, Barack is NOT a socialist. His idea of putting a heavier tax burden on the rich only makes sense. He is not taking their money and giving it to the poor. He only wants to lessen the burden on individuals who are struggling right now.”

Well apparently Kylelee is herself a socialist thinker — so she’s a poor judge of what is and what isn’t socialism.

Taking people’s money by force and giving it to someone else is, on its face, illegal but in Obama’s thinking (and Kylelee’s) its perfectly acceptable and, on top of that, “it only makes sense”.

We are already living in a virtual ‘nanny-state’ and Obama just wants to make it larger and more all-encompassing. He said this himself in a TV interview; this is not a direct quote but it is very close: ‘we live in a culture where its every man for himself, we have to change that so that everyone is responsible for looking out for each other.’

That sentiment is wonderful on a community level and on a *voluntary* basis but it has no business coming out of the mouth of a man running for president of this *once proud* nation. No longer can we be proud because every level of government, in far too many places in this country, is infested with people like you Kylelee — people who really believe that we can, with impunity, take from those who earned their money and give it to those who did not.

The United States of America, with your help, may well be on its way to becoming a third-world country, not only because we have lost the pride and dignity we once had but because the kind of thinking displayed by Barack Obama (and Kylelee) will certainly destroy our economy.

(NOTE: I come down hard on those who want to “take from the rich” not because I’m anywhere near rich — I make very little and live from paycheck to paycheck — but because I love what this country used to stand for: individualism, personal responsibility, opportunity, volunterism and pride in our strength, freedom and liberty.)

Don’t shred our Constitution

We understand you well Barack
we simply can’t agree,
your plans fulfilled and promises kept

Elizabeth Dole: Playing the God Card

Standard

This election season, the Republican party seems to have found a specialty; it goes like this: “Look who my opponent has associated with in the past.”

Now that IS a valid question . . . AND a valid test of character! A person does choose his/her friends and associates among those who reflect the qualities that he/she admires, enjoys and hopes (sometimes secretly) to emulate. Politics aside, be honest — that’s how you choose your friends, right?

The McCain camp has used this tactic fairly effectively against Obama, because it seems that much of Obama’s political life has been filled with anarchists, America haters and other disreputable types . . . well at least I think that this type of person can fairly be called ‘disreputable’.

Now look what happened when Republican Sen. Elizabeth Dole tried that tactic — or at least a similar tactic – against her North Carolina opponent Sen. Kay Hagan:

Senator Dole’s campaign released a video ad that accused Senator Hagan of being “godless” because she attended a fundraiser at the home of Woody Kaplan a member of the advisory board of the “Godless Americans Political Action Committee”, which supports the separation of church and state and consists mainly of atheists. Dole’s ad made it sound like Hagan was secretly attending a meeting with only ‘Godless Americans’ in attendance and implied that she secretly ‘made promises’ to these folks, when the fact is Mr, Kaplan was the only member of that organization in attendance and the gathering was also attended by a U.S. Ambassador and by Senator John Kerry. Additionally, Sen. Hagan is reportedly a regular church goer and, by some accounts, also a Sunday School teacher.

The response in the news media was immediate and overwhelming:

The Kansas City Star editorial page proclaimed: “Elizabeth Dole deserves to lose for cheap-shot godless ad”

The Miami Herald headline read: “Voters, church leader speak out against Dole’s `godless’ ad”

Sen. Hagan’s response was also immediate: her campaign released a video response and Sen, Hagan filed a lawsuit charging the Dole campaign with defamation and libel.

You can see both videos, Dole’s charge and Hagan’s response HERE.

It is apparent that, in Sen. Dole’s mind, Hagan’s brief association with atheists (well, at least one atheist) is as bad as Obama’s continual association with people who hate America, have no respect for our Constitution and want to convert our political system to a quasi-socialist system. It’s also apparent that Elizabeth Dole is a ‘Christian bigot!

Bad girl Elizabeth! Criticize a persons politics all day long but stay away from their religion. You were elected as a senator to serve your country, our Constitution and our political system . . . not to serve your church.

Rambling On:

Obama’s “Economic Justice”

Standard

Conservative talk show hosts are jumping on Barack Obama’s words in a YouTube video of a 2001 Chicago Public Radio Interview. Now Conservative talk show hosts are just like Legislators — you can’t trust them to tell the entire truth — don’t listen to them . . . listen to Obama: In this interview, Obama spoke very clearly of redistribution of wealth, how it was not addressed by the Warren Court, how he felt that was a failure of the court and how he felt it could best be accomplished through legislation.

That’s bad — very bad! Redistribution of wealth is a Marxist idea and should not even be a consideration in this country — yet Obama doesn’t say anything like that — instead, he seems upset that the court never got that “radical.”

Perhaps as bad (in the sense that it changes our entire way of life) Obama speaks of their failure to address “more basic issues of political and economic justice in this society.” I’m not sure what he meant by political justice — it seems to me that political justice is the biggest success of the civil rights movement. His phrase “economic justice,” however, leaves little room for interpretation in the context of this discussion.

Again, economic justice (same as redistribution of wealth) is not what the United States is about. Americans work long and hard to bring a paycheck home — those who can’t or don’t work rely on the charity of others and there is LOTS of charity in the United States — that’s the way it always has been and that’s the way it should be. THAT’S economic justice!

Here’s the complete quote I’ve been talking about (just so you don’t think I’ve taken his words out of context):

“You know, if you look at the victories and failures of the civil rights movements and its litigation strategy in the court, I think where it succeeded was to vest formal rights in previously dispossessed peoples so that I would now have the right to vote, I would now be able to sit at the lunch counter and order and as long as I could pay for it, I’d be okay; but the Supreme Court never ventured into the issues of redistribution of wealth and more basic issues of political and economic justice in this society.

And to that extent, as radical as I think people try to characterize the Warren court it wasn’t that radical. It didn’t break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the founding fathers in the Constitution, at least as it’s been interpreted and Warren interpreted it in the same way that generally is a charter of negative liberties.”

There is more and it is all pretty much the same — the entire audio/video of his words can be found in that YouTube video HERE

If this doesn’t make it clear to you what Obama is all about you apparently just don’t want to know . . . OR maybe you like that idea — the idea of riding through life on the backs of others. Unfortunately a large portion of our society (certainly far from the majority) has devolved into the “give to me” generation. They feel that they have a right to government handouts . . . and, you know what? Many legislators (perhaps most) agree with that.

No, these legislators don’t really give a crap for poor people; what they’re after is more power over our lives and more government control of our resources (again back to Marxist ideology). These legislators are in both political parties and in the middle as well and they’re there because WE put them there. They promised us this and that and we fell for it — everybody loves a freebie and we, every two years, are promised lots of freebies.

It’s time to remake the Legislature and the only way we can do that is, in this election, vote out every currently seated Senator or Congressman who supports Obama and preaches the Obama mantra of “change.” Take your country back and don’t just look for change — look for candidates who want our country ‘changed back’ into the country we once lived in.

Change can be good or it can be bad — the Change Senator Obama wants is very unhealthy for America.

Our Impending Attitude Adjustment

Standard

Whichever candidate finally leaps (or crawls) to victory on this election day you can bet on this: his presidency will look nothing like the picture he is painting today!

Reality will set in and the next four years will be driven not by the candidate’s plans, wishes, dreams or promises, but by the hard realities of our National debt, our depressed economy, International tensions, the war in Iraq, the war in Afghanistan, the freak who acts as mouthpiece for the Ayatollahs in Iran, the less-desirable whims of Kim Jong-Il and Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin and the hundreds of other potential disasters that “ping” the White House every day.

After the massive bailouts, if the new president acts responsibly, there will be little or no money for the new programs and/or incentives he is promising today; on the other hand, if the new president is irresponsible out National debt may grow to a point that we will, for all intents and purposes, be owned by the countries who have loaned us the money to continue functioning — most notably China.

Who should Govern?

I am admittedly biased against an Obama presidency because of his socialist tendencies and because of the fact that, even as a Junior Senator, he has the most Liberal voting record in the Senate (BTW: that is a documented fact, not just an idle claim of the Republican Party. Under an Obama presidency, I’m firmly convinced, the next 4 years could get very ugly.

BUT

I also dread a McCain presidency because, besides being a maverick, he is also the great compromiser. John McCain can find the good side in any bad argument. I’m not saying that McCain is unprincipled, I’m suggesting that his principles are so broad that they will be able to encompass some unsavory choices. Under a McCain presidency, the next four years may not be too much better.

Attitude Adjustment

So whatever the next four yours bring, I’m in for an Attitude Adjustment because, whatever happens I have no choice but to accept it and try to make the best of it. That, however, is not to say that I will not protest loudly in e-mails, calls, letters and blog posts — I realize that government changes very slowly, but a good public outcry tends to speed it up.

I would bet that, after the January inauguration you’ll find yourself in the exact same position.

Just as a personal note: I’ve found that 12 to 24 ounces of my favorite malt beverage every night after work (never more than that) makes lifes little transitions much easier and some say that it’s even ‘good for you.’.

Here Comes That Damned Federal Marriage Amendment Again!

Standard

Sarah Palin — and people like her — make me so damn mad! She (and they) believe that every citizen of the United States should be forced by law to conform to HER OWN PERSONAL moral code.

Earlier this week, in an interview, she came out in support of the proposed (Proposed by “W” in 2004) CONSTITUTIONAL BAN on marriage between two people of the same sex.

I ask you, what the hell business is it of the United States government, Sarah Palin, George W. Bush or any state government for that matter, if two woman or two men want to get married to each other.

Does a gay marriage interfere with anyone’s rights?

NO!

Does anyone loose any property when two gay people decide they want to be married?

NO!

Does gay marriage put anyone out of work or take money out of their bank accounts?

No, of course not!

So is it anyone’s business?

NO!

I’ll tell you what it apparently does do — although I really don’t understand why — it apparently scares people!

Perhaps it makes them doubt their own sexuality; or perhaps it makes them doubt that what their mommy and daddy and their priest or preacher told them about marriage is true.

WELL SORRY ABOUT THAT FOLKS! You’ve been told a lot of lies in your life and its about time you start questioning them — and there are lots of archaic laws and customs being foisted on you — it’s about time you questioned them too.

Why Marriage Licenses?

According to Wikipedia: “The requirement for marriage licenses in the U.S. has been justified on the basis that the state has an overriding right, on behalf of all citizens and in the interests of the larger social welfare, to protect them from disease or improper/illegal marriages; to keep accurate state records; or even to ensure that marriage partners have had adequate time to think carefully before marrying.”

That “overriding right” is, of course, a presumed right and it has been questioned and challenged over the years but common sense will, unfortunately, never make a dent in judicial fiat.

Its interesting to note that issuing a license implies that no one has the “right” to marry it is a privilege given to you by your state. It is also interesting to note that throughout history the refusal to issue a marriage license was a weapon used by the church and later by the government to prevent marriages that were considered inappropriate — in the early part of the 20th Century in the US, the marriage license was used in this way to prevent interracial marriages.

What the hell good is all this talk of freedom and liberty if adults cannot legally make their own decisions regarding who they will share their lives with?

Sorry Sarah — I love you as a potential VP but you really suck as a marriage councilor.

Obama Blasted For Speaking The Truth

Standard

I guess Barack Obama hasn’t learned the lesson that honesty . . . when on the “stump”, when trying to become the nation’s next president . . . is NOT the best policy.

Here are the words Obama spoke at a small political gathering in Pennsylvania last week:

“But the truth is, is that, our challenge is to get people persuaded that we can make progress when there’s not evidence of that in their daily lives. You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

For this, Barack Obama has been directly compared to Karl Marx; Marx most famously spoke about religion being the opiate of the people — and, indeed it is. Life can be cruel and unfair and millions of people, not only in the “small towns” Obama targeted but in large, urban settings, have no other way to handle it. These people are in ‘pain’ and the source of the pain, their economic woes and a bleak future that seems endless, are too much for many people to handle without something to grasp onto.

So what do they turn to for comfort? Many turn to religion — to that ‘blind faith’ that has proven, time after time, to be the most powerful tool the human mind can conjure to combat the inequities of life. Many people, however, are inclined to reject the “quiet fight” of religious faith and instead harness their raw emotions; they allow their fear of the unknown and of uncertainty to take them down the road of hate — hate expressed, as Obama suggested, in their antipathy either toward those immigrants that they see as the cause of many economic woes, toward other races who they fear because of a lack of familiarity or toward the government and the government’s policies.

Obama’s political enemies have happily labeled Obama as an “elitist” since he spoke about the reality of bitterness but that is an obvious distortion. If anything Brack Obama’s “bitter” remark (as it’s being called in today’s news stories) shows that he may be the only candidate who can, at least occasionally, be trusted to say what he sees as the truth — as unpopular as it may be. True, the majority of the time he will engage in the same ‘politi-speak’ you hear from Clinton (either one) or McCain but Obama has his moments where he will speak from the heart. It’s up to us to listen during those moments and reject that automatic Democratic, Republican, Conservative or Liberal bias that will creep into our judgment as we listen — bias such as that makes you blind to reality and deaf to truth.
